Beginning with images from Buddhist temples of Sri Lanka, this book takes the reader through a visual journey from the time of the last Kandyan kings to the early years of Independence. The images have been arranged thematically to introduce the visual communication in the Theravada tradition, guiding the reader into the world of Buddhist ritual practice, cosmology, mythology and history of about two hundred years. The images of murals statues, architecture, temple interiors and calligraphy are placed in a small island that was dominated by colonial powers until 1948. Some of the aspects highlighted in this volume of Buddhist Image Houses are analyzed and interpreted in academic essays in the next volume of this series; Evolving Traditions of Buddhist Image Houses. The more curious reader is invited to www.samkathana.lk website to discover details of the images featured in both volumes and the directions to visit each site to make journey. The Samkathana Research Centre at the University of Kelaniya is prepared to support further research though the large archive that was made possible with savings from the fund granted by the project Higher Education for the Twenty First Century (HETC) to the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Kelaniya. This book has not been conceptualized as a coffee table book. It incorporates photographs from our research as well as Samkathana research assistants earlier field trips. As such, the visual material published here and stored in the archive may not satisfy the eye of the fastidious photographer, but stand testimony to the constant decay and change. The images have been arranged thematically to introduce the visual communication in the Theravada tradition , guiding the reader into the world of Buddhist ritual practice, cosmology, mythology and history of about two hundred years. The images of murals statues, architecture, temple interious and calligraphy are placed in a small island that was dominated by colonial powers until 1948.
